Walking through the panic: Carrollton mother works to help others with panic and anxietyCheryl Poldrugach suffered from panic and anxiety. When her children began to show signs of anxiety, she decided it was time to help not only them, but others who battle with the illness. Poldrugach created a product known as Panic Aide and is currently working on starting a nonprofit that provides counseling and medication for those who aren’t able to afford mental health treatment.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a mom who suffers from severe anxiety with panic attacks; and that has brought me to being the founder of Panic Aide. I am passionate about helping others and my family. I reside in Carrollton with my husband and our four children, two dogs and one cat.
What inspired you to help others with their anxiety?
It started with my son. I was heartbroken that he inherited anxiety from me, but honestly at the time I would have never revealed to anyone what I was going through. Fast forward to a few years ago when my daughter started having anxiety issues (as well as most of her friends), and that is when I knew I had to tell them about my anxiety and panic. My focus now is to help them with their journey through it. Since then it has been my passion to help others with their anxiety and panic.
In your opinion, what are some ways people can combat panic and anxiety?
Go to counseling, and be consistent with it as it will help you more than you know. Keep your circle around you with positive and supportive people. Prayer, faith and a positive attitude help as well.
What helped you get through your own anxiety?
Getting through my anxiety is a daily battle but my journey is paved with talking to God, going to counseling, and support from my family. I have also learned techniques to get through when a panic attack hits.
You mentioned your working on starting a nonprofit. What would that nonprofit look like?
I am working with my counselor Chris Bouchard from Momentum Counseling to find the best way to help those who can’t afford mental healthcare. Counselors and psychiatrists from across the country will offer free services and medication once we get all the logistics worked out.
What are some misconceptions people have about anxiety?
There are many misconceptions about anxiety, but the most common one is that people say it is ‘fake’ or they trivialize it. Anxiety can be crippling with physical issues.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love being with my family, playing with my dogs and cooking. I also love to be outdoors.
What's your favorite movie?
My all-time favorite movie is “Wizard of Oz,” but “Never Been Kissed” with Drew Barrymore is my go to at anytime when I need to smile.
What are some things that make you laugh?
My family. We are a silly bunch and we love to laugh. Practical jokes are rampant in our household so a lot of laughter comes with that.
What's something you've always wanted to do but never had the chance to?
Travel. My anxiety has been an issue in the past which has kept me from visiting my family in New York.
